Having studied through Unisa towards my undergraduate degree in Visual Art, I experienced the challenges of a long distance learning situation and the stumbling blocks this route may create towards successful completion of a degree – perhaps a harder route because of much less access to lecturers, fellow students and the benefits of University workshops equipped to support learning also in the practical realisation of ideas. Positive by-products of studying independently though, are developing a strong work ethic and in time a clear 'personal voice’ as an artist. During my Unisa studies (1998) I had the opportunity and joy to teach junior students in order to help them explore and develop new techniques and approaches to practical art making processes.
